YA Pride’s Pride Month Blogathon– and how you can participate!

By |2020-05-13T23:34:21-05:00May 14th, 2020|Categories: Archive, Updates and Announcements|

Although Pride is going to be a different and difficult experience for many of us this year, community remains more important than ever. In the midst of this scary time, the book community has already come together in so many wonderful ways, including virtual panels, instagram live sessions, and a plethora of giveaways. With most in-person Pride events, publishing conferences, and author readings cancelled, we wanted to provide a way for the LGBTQIAP+ YA book community to connect virtually: our Pride Month Blogathon. Every day during the month of June, we will feature a post from a YA [...]

Queer YA Releases Pushed Back Because of COVID-19

By |2020-05-06T13:58:45-05:00May 6th, 2020|Categories: Archive, Book Lists, New Releases|

by Vee Signorelli Due to COVID-19, hundreds of books have had their release dates pushed back, with several LGBTQIAP+ YA titles included. This is a comprehensive-as-possible list of all the LGBTQIAP+ YA that has been delayed. (If we've missed any, please tweet us at @YA_Pride or email us at contact@yapride.org!) Let's continue to support these authors and stories throughout these uncertain and difficult times. Almost all of these titles were pulled (with permission!) from Julie's list here, an incredibly extensive list of YA and MG titles that have been delayed. Definitely check out that list and follow Julie [...]

Trans YA Books by Trans Authors

By |2020-03-28T13:39:53-05:00December 19th, 2019|Categories: Archive|Tags: |

Earlier today, J.K. Rowling tweeted her support for Maya Forstater, a woman who lost her job after tweeting anti-trans messages. J.K. Rowling’s tweet contained the underlying message that although trans people can “dress however [they] please” and “call [themselves] whatever [they]” want, at the end of the day, they are still kidding themselves. Although Rowling may not agree with how her statement is being received, this is a deeply anti-trans sentiment. And although some of Rowling’s anti-trans views have been publicized before, this tweet was one of the most explicit statements of what she thinks about us. Many of [...]

YA Pride’s Gift Guide for LGBTQIAP+ Book Lovers

By |2020-03-28T13:39:53-05:00December 18th, 2019|Categories: Archive|

Those of us who love LGBTQIAP+ books are a fairly small, niche group. As such, it can be extremely hard for friends and loved ones to find gifts for us. Of course, as a well-rounded group of people with myriad interests, we don't need gifts that reflect this part of our personality. But occasionally, it would be nice to receive a gift that reflected this bookish love. After years of feeling this way, I finally decided to put together a guide to some of the best gifts I have found for LGBTQIAP+ book lovers. Let me know if you [...]

YA Pride Issue #2 – The Power of Teens

By |2020-03-28T15:09:36-05:00December 6th, 2019|Categories: Archive, YA Pride Issue|

Teens are the reason that Young Adult literature exists. The adult members of the YA community write, edit, publish, blog, buy, and organize so that teens can have excellent books to read. And yet, it can be easy to lose sight of this, the reason we are doing it all. This issue reconnects us with that reason, reminding us all why we are here and doing this work-- for teens!  This issue was headed up by our fantastic team member Kaitlin (@writerkaitlinm). She conducted interviews with five excellent authors on the power of teens and how [...]

Issue #1: Pride Edition

By |2020-03-28T15:09:45-05:00June 19th, 2019|Categories: Archive, YA Pride Issue|

Dear Reader, Welcome to the first ever periodical issue of YA Pride! After being on a semi-hiatus for the past year, we are re-launching with a brand new format and clarified focus. Instead of our usual blog post format, we will be transitioning to a quarterly online periodical. With the change in format comes a change in content. Instead of one-off pieces, we are shifting our focus to slower, long-form, in-depth journalistic pieces, that are based on reflection, community conversation, and research. By switching to this type of content, we hope to continue [...]

Call for Submissions: Sexual Violence in LGBTQIAP+ YA

By |2020-03-28T13:39:57-05:00April 15th, 2019|Categories: Updates and Announcements|Tags: |

For Sexual Assault Awareness Month we want to shine a light on representation of sexual violence in LGBTQIAP+ Young Adult literature. Or, rather, the lack thereof-- there are not very many characters in LGBTQIAP+ YA who are survivors of sexual violence. I have wanted to do this project for a long time. Sexual violence radically impacted my teenage years and there were so few resources (especially for a queer, trans teen) to turn to. LGBTQIAP+ YA was instrumental to my process of figuring out my queer, trans identity. Unfortunately, it left me stranded with figuring out how to [...]

My Kind of Story

By |2020-03-28T13:39:57-05:00February 21st, 2019|Categories: Archive|

Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week Series by Laura Pohl I’ve always loved reading love stories. There was nothing like opening a book to find a sweeping romance on its pages, love stories like I’d never seen before. Love stories that defied everything, society, family, even death. They were stories that made me fiercely believe in this powerful, unknown force. Stories that were impossible. I never even stopped to consider that it’s what love always meant for me: something impossible. It took me a while to understand my place while I was still in high school. Every single person [...]

Working Draft

By |2020-03-28T13:39:57-05:00February 20th, 2019|Categories: Archive|

Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week Series by Rosiee Thor Draft 1: I stumble through the motions of a story told poorly. It is flimsy framework, a bare beginning most of which I will tear down and rebuild. But it is written, and it is done. No one kisses anyone in this draft. I know I’ll have to change that, because everyone tells me teens only read YA for the romance--“If they can’t ship it, they’ll skip it.” Was I not a teen once too? Who will write for the girl I was, who lied about crushes at slumber parties [...]
